FAQs

What is a Direct Vent wood fire?

Essentially, it comes down to airflow – where it comes from and where it ends up.

Older wood fireplaces draw air from inside the home to fuel the fire. This creates draughts, disrupts natural airflow, and often require additional wall vents to replace the air being consumed.

A Direct Vent wood fire works differently. It draws fresh air from outside the home for combustion and expels exhaust back outside through a dual flue system. The firebox air operates independently from the room air — the two don't mix. Because these wood fires don't rely on indoor air to burn, it eliminates draughts, removes the need for extra venting, and won't compete with rangehoods or other ventilation systems. The result is wood fire that ultimately heats your home more efficiently.

Do I need consent to install a wood fireplace?

In New Zealand, installing a wood fireplace requires building consent. Wood fires must be installed in accordance with local building codes and regional air quality regulations. Requirements can vary depending on where you live, the type of home, and the model being installed.

Your installer or local council can confirm exactly what’s needed for your property. Your local Escea retailer will also be familiar with regional requirements and can guide you through the process.

What is the best way to light a wood fireplace?

Escea wood fires are best lit using the 'top-down method'. Start by placing larger logs at the bottom, then layer smaller pieces on top, finishing with thin kindling and scrunched newspaper or wood shavings. Firelighters are optional.

As the fire starts, leave the door slightly ajar to help establish airflow. Once the flames are burning strongly, close the door. A well-laid fire should establish within 10–15 minutes. When the fire has burned down to red coals, briefly crack the door to boost airflow before adding more wood.

What type of firewood is best to burn?

Hardwoods, such as Redgum or Grey Box, are best for Escea wood fireplaces because they burn hotter and longer. Softwood kindling is ideal for starting the fire.

Always use seasoned, dry wood. Softwoods should be seasoned for at least 12 months, and hardwoods for up to 2 years. Logs should be roughly 400 mm long, with smaller pieces used for kindling and early burn stages.

Wet or unseasoned wood will smoulder, create smoke, reduce heat output, and dirty your fire and flue.

How do I tell if my wood is dry enough to burn?

Every Escea wood fireplace comes with a Moisture Meter to help you check that your firewood is ready to burn. A Moisture Meter is a simple handheld tool that measures how much water is in your firewood.

To use it, insert the two probes into the end grain of the log. The meter will display the moisture content instantly. For best performance, your wood should be below 24% moisture, ideally between 12%–18%. Damp wood will smoulder, produce less heat, and create a dirtier, less efficient fire.

How often do wood fires need cleaning?

Your wood fireplace should be professionally serviced and your flue cleaned at least once a year. This keeps your fire running safely and efficiently, and helps prevent creosote build-up.

In between annual services, there are a few simple things you can do to keep your fire performing at its best. Regularly empty excess ash, keeping a small bed for insulation, and clean the glass as needed to maintain a clear view of the flame.

Burning dry wood will also reduce build-up and minimise how often cleaning is required.
