Are gas fireplaces safe?
Modern Direct Vent room-sealed gas fireplaces, like Escea’s, are one of the safest types of gas fireplaces you can install in your home.
These fireplaces are completely sealed to the room – the air used for combustion comes from outside, and all fumes are expelled back outside too. This means no exhaust gases enter your home, making them safer for your health, and more efficient than open-front gas fireplaces.
Like any heating appliance, the glass can get hot to touch while the fire is operating. For added peace of mind, Escea offers optional mesh screens on many gas models to help protect little hands and paws. Every Escea gas fireplace is built with an airtight steel firebox, tested multiple times during manufacturing, run on high before shipping, and includes a thermostat to prevent overheating.
Which types of gas fireplaces does Escea have?
All Escea indoor gas fireplaces are Powered Direct Vent, fully glass-fronted and room-sealed, and have a Zero Clearance rating for maximum design and installation flexibility.
Escea offers three main installation types. Insert fireplaces (DF Series) slot into an existing cavity or chimney, making them ideal for retrofits. Inbuilt fireplaces (DS Series, DN Series) are designed to be built into new framing for renovations or new builds. Freestanding fireplaces (DFS Series) are perfect for replacing older freestanding units or creating a statement feature.
Across these, Escea also offers a wide range of styles — including single sided, double sided, corner, peninsula, freestanding, classic and linear designs — ensuring there’s a model to suit every home and style.

Can I retrofit a gas fireplace into my existing chimney?
Yes. Escea’s DF Series is suitable for retrofitting into existing chimneys or cavities. The insert design allows the fire to slide into the existing opening, and the flexible flue can be fitted up the chimney. As long as the cavity is large enough, retrofitting is usually straightforward, and you'll need a licensed gasfitter to complete the installation safely.
Do gas fireplaces actually heat?
Yes. Modern gas fireplaces — especially Escea’s Powered Direct Vent models — deliver consistent, powerful warmth. Depending on the model, heat output ranges from approximately 5.2 kW up to around 9.7 kW for the larger gas models.
What size gas fireplace do I need?
Start by working out how much heat output your space needs. As a general guide, 1 kW of heat output will warm approximately 12m² of floor area. To estimate what you need, calculate the floor area of your room (length × width), then divide the total floor area by 12. This will give you a minimum heat output requirement in kW.
Consider whether the fireplace will be your primary or secondary heat source, as well as the size of the space — larger or open-plan areas will typically require higher heat output.
