Yes. You can have your fireplace in the middle of the room and enjoy its ambience and warmth without the need for a pillar or wall to cover the flue pipes.

This is possible through a creative combination of technologies. In the modern world of fireplaces, you no longer have to have a natural draft flue going straight up through the roof. By including a powered flue, the air is forced by a fan to move up, down, or horizontally within the pipes to exit on an outside vertical wall or above the roof.

Another important piece of flue technology is the balanced flue (also called a direct vent). Rather than the fireplace drawing air for combustion from the room, as has traditionally been the case, air for combustion is now brought in from outside the building, used in combustion and expelled back outside. This solution offers many benefits to architects and homeowners.

There are no draughts, there is no need for additional ventilation to avoid negative pressure in the room, and the fireplace performance is not affected by other things such as extractor fans, open or closing doors etc.

By combining these technologies, flue pipes can run for metres without the problem and in some cases even under the floor. This obviously gives you much-needed freedom in selecting a location for the fireplace and designing the look and feel of your room.
